Public Comments on September 26, 2005

At the Board of Education Meeting of September 26, 2005, two officers and one member of MCEF made public comments. Although each was prepared by the individual alone, each reflects our shared concern about inequitable educational practices in Montgomery County and is consistent with the shared concerns of the Equity in Education Coalition.

- Mark Adelman spoke about the misuse of words and phrases in the public dialogue about public education and how the misuse of such terms as "gifted and talented" can have corrupting effects on the ability of our school system to educate all of our children. - Evie Frankl, speaking on behalf of MCEF and the Equity in Education Coalition, expressed pleasure that Superintendent Weast and the Board were beginning to respond to our concerns, but demanded that MCPS act more rapidly and aggressively to end inequitable educational practices in Montgomery County. In particular she called for an end to the second grade global screening process. To download a pdf version of her comments, click here.

- Fran Rothstein, speaking as the parent of a child who has benefited from the special resources available to students in "gifted and talented" and other advanced programs, discussed the damage done to all students, including those in enriched classes, when some students are separated out and labeled "not gifted, not talented."
