EQUITY IN EDUCATION COALITION
On June 15, 2005, at a press conference held outside the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville, MCEF announced the formation of a coalition of organizations and individuals committed to ending the inequitable practices of MCPS that deprive over half the students of Montgomery County of a quality education. The press conference received coverage in at least two area newspapers.
The following is excerpted from a Washington Post article (p. B8, June 16) by Lori Aratani:
"....The latter issue (...Board of Education action on gifted and talented education programs) came on the heels of an early morning news conference in which a group of activists announced the formation of a coalition that would work to end tracking in Montgomery public schools.
"What we want to do is incorporate the gifted and talented program into what every child gets", said Evie Frankl, the parent of a student at Northwood High School and a member of the newly formed Equity in Education Coalition.
The group includes representatives from the Montgomery County branch of the NAACP, as well as the NAACP's Parent Council, Progressive Maryland, The Montgomery County Education Forum, and the African American Parents of Montgomery County.
Members of the group said they are planning a forum in the fall to talk to the broader community about equity issues in the schools."
The following is excerpted from a Gazette Newspaper article by Sean R. Sedam (June 17, 2005):
"Montgomery gifted-talented policy decried.
Representatives of civic organizations and parents groups announced Tuesday that they are forming a coalition to push for changes to how gifted and talented students are identified in Montgomery County, saying the current process creates a "two-tiered" public education system."
