Tracking in Montgomery County Public Schools

On Saturday, February 9, 2002, MCEF held a meeting on tracking in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). Attracted by word-of-mouth and a simple flyer (middle thumbnail above, click here for a larger image), more than two hundred people gathered at Blair High School to learn more about this issue and discuss ways to mitigate the damage tracking does to so many of our children.
For many the most powerful portion of the event was a panel (left thumbnail) in which students discussed their experiences with respect to tracking in MCPS. To view a video clip of this portion of the event, click here. (The file is 37 MB and runs for about 30 minutes.)
After the student discussion segment the audience was privileged to hear comments by Bob Moses, educator, author, founder of The Alegra Project, and civil rights leader. To view a video clip of some of his talk, click here. (The file is 17 MB and runs for about 16 minutes.)
When the formal program ended the audience assembled into informal discussion groups to explore issues raised by the students and by Bob Moses. Many who were not already familiar with MCEF and our position paper on tracking took the opportunity to pick up a copy of this document, "Success for Every Student?", which you can download by clicking here.
